The beautiful Waitomo Caves

The beautiful Waitomo Caves

The Waitomo Caves are a popular tour we offer at Custom Day Tours. What people often don’t know before visiting is that at this must see attraction; there are three separate caves to explore.

Each unique, they are explained below to give you the facts before you get there. The Waitomo Caves Tour is a tour that should absolutely be on your bucket list.

The Aranui Cave is named after Ruruku Aranui, the local Moari man who discovered this previous secret back in 1910. It is the smallest cave of the three and is the most delicate. Full of New Zealand cave wetas and further into the cave is the most beautiful collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and decorative formations. This cave is centred around Moari myth and legend.

The Ruakuri Cave (rua meaning den, and kuri meaning dog) was discovered 400-500 years ago. It has been open to the public only since 2005. A spectacular spiral entrance takes you to the limestone formations and crystal tapestries. Ruakuri Cave is New Zealand’s longest guided underground walking tour.

The final caves are the Waitomo Glow-worm Caves. Popular with overseas and New Zealand visitors, it is certainly placed high on the list of “Things to see in Aotearoa”. Thousands of these tiny glowworms radiate their unmistakable luminescent light as expert guides provide informative commentary on the Caves’ historical and geological significance.

This really is a tour that is a must. Whether you are from overseas or you live in the North Island of our beautiful country. If you haven’t already, the Waitomo Caves are an absolute must see.
